Slippery elm/ Nhanzva/ Isikhukhukhu

Nhanzva (scientific Pouzolzia mixta or P. hypoleuca, Ndebele: isikhukhukhu) is a Zimbabwean medicinal plant often used as a local slippery elm due to its mucilaginous, soothing properties. Its most prominent traditional use is in childbirth, where root extracts are applied to dilate the birth canal and prevent tearing during labor. Additionally, it is used for postpartum constipation, peptic ulcers, and stomach acids. While effective, it is a potent traditional remedy that should only be used under the guidance of a knowledgeable naturopath or healthcare provider.
